On July 8th we’ll again be having Lightning Talks – 4-5 short talks by different presenters, each 5-10 minutes long.
Presenters:
Brian Watson
Formerly a Test Manager at Microsoft, currently a Senior QA Engineer consultant with Deloitte Digital. In his 13 year career at Microsoft and 3 years at Deloitte he has been involved in dozens of software and other types of projects, mostly involving Mobile Computing but what did they all have in common? They all culminated in releasing a product. Some went well, others not so well. Why do some releases go well and others not? What can QA do to help the release go more smoothly?

Ian King
DIFFERENTLY ABLED: Today, many companies test for accessibility, but for whom? This presentation considers the people for whom we create accessible software. We will also talk about why ‘the A word’ really matters.
Ian King is placed at Google in Kirkland, where he is responsible for accessibility testing of the Google Hangouts suite of products. Previous experience in software engineering includes twelve years in software test development at Microsoft. In other professional work, he helped found the Living Computer Museum in Seattle. Ian is currently pursuing a doctorate in Information Science, and is also a classical vocalist, performing duets with his teenage daughter as well as solo work.
Cristina Marinovici
Assuring Data Quality in Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project: Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project (PNWSGDP) was the largest of the 16 national demonstrations funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Conducted by Battelle Memorial Institute, which operates Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), PNWSGDP engaged eleven utilities, two universities and six technology providers across five states. In large systems, such as the electric power grid, were a large amount of data is generated by billions of devices every second, ensuring data correctness is a task of the highest priority. Data means nothing without the right processes to integrate, centralize and maintain all the information, such that thorough analyses could be performed on resulted data from the project. Numbers would have been irrelevant, hadn’t been for the development of a data collection and analysis system. Collecting big data has its challenges, but guaranteeing reliable data quality and its relationship to decision making are even greater challenges.
Cristina Marinovici has an MS and PhD in Mathematics from Louisiana State University, an MS in Automated Controls and BS in Computer Science from “Gh. Asachi” Technical University of Iasi in Romania. She joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a software engineer in August 2010. At PNNL, as part of the Electricity Infrastructure group, Dr. Marinovici is responsible for directing and supporting the research and development of techniques and tools that assist in ensuring the reliability and security of the electric grid in North America. Her research interests include power system operations, smart grid and renewable energy integration, as well as data analysis, scientific computing and parallel processing. She is a member of the IEEE, IEEE Women in Engineering (IEEE WIE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
